It’s hard enough tracking down which points transfer to what airline partner with so many different transferable currencies, right? Etihad Guest Promo with Capital One*
This bonus is structured a little bit differently than most, so we wanted to provide some insight as to how it’s going to work.
Etihad is offering a tiered bonus structure for transferring Capital One miles to their program, and you’ll earn a different bonus depending on how many miles you move. Since this is a partner bonus, it means that the bonus points may not show up immediately since they’re being given by the airline itself (but we’re already seeing datapoints that it should be instant). Here’s an excerpt straight from their website for full visibility:

Bank vs Airline-Side Bonuses
The table above also points out in the last column whether the bonus is being awarded by the bank or the airline. This is important due to timing of when you’ll receive the extra points.
Typically with bank-side bonus (extra bonus points that are awarded to us from the bank itself), the points are deposited into your transfer partner account at the same time as the base points you transfer over.
For airline-side bonuses, those extra points can sometimes take longer. Much longer. It all depends on what the travel partner’s fine print says on their website. Sometimes it’s estimated it’ll take a few minutes or hours longer, whereas other promotions can state you won’t receive the bonus points until after the end of the transfer bonus period.
Make sure to always read the fine print on any transfer bonus pages being hosted by the transfer partner for full terms and conditions!
When Should You Transfer Points & Miles
This is the part where art gets mixed into the science a bit.
I’d say 99% of us in this hobby will repeat “the mantra” about transferring points almost every time we’re asked, and that is: don’t transfer speculatively!
What that means is don’t transfer your points to a travel partner for the sole reason that they’re running a transfer bonus deal. If you’re unable to find availability to fit your travel schedule, those points could be orphaned at that partner for a very long time until they become useful again (ask me how I know).
Instead, strategize your travel for the upcoming quarter, year, and longer than a year, then keep a close eye on when bonuses like these come around. You want to be ready to act quick when you see something that works with your travel preference!
Transfer Value Calculator
If you’re struggling to run the numbers on exactly how many points you’d need to transfer over to end up at a desired sum, try out our transfer calculator located here.
This tool is incredibly simple to use, and will take into account the base transfer ratios (usually 1:1), the bonus amount you’ll receive after transferring, and then round up to the nearest 1,000 to make sure you end up with enough to book your award seat.
Getting to the Point(s)
Transfer bonuses from our points and miles partners to airlines and hotels can be an incredibly useful tool in our hobby, but make sure you have a trip in mind before sending points over to the partner for the bonus.
Once you complete that step, the points are stuck at that partner until they’re used (except in very rare circumstances).
If you’re able to do so, I highly recommend planning out your short, mid, and long term travel plans so you’re ready to transfer and book as soon as new deals come around.
